TRP Policy
In Arizoa, a Temporary Registration Plate (TRP) is issued by licensed dealers upon the sale of a vehicle. This permit allows the buyer to legally operate the vehicle for any purpose while awaiting permanent registration and license plates.
Key Details of the TRP:
- Validity Period: The TRP is valid for 45 days from the date of issuance. This timeframe is designed to provide sufficient time for the processing of permanent registration and plates.
- Issuance Process: Upon purchasing a vehicle from a licensed dealer, the dealer will provide the TRP, enabling immediate legal operation of the vehicle. By issuing the TRP, the dealer is agreeing to act as an agent for the purchaser, and must submit the title and registration application to MVD, usually through a third party, within 30 days of the sale.
- Usage: The TRP permits the vehicle to be driven for any purpose during its validity period.
It’s important to note that the TRP is specifically for vehicles purchased through licensed dealers. For private sales or other situations, different permits may be purchased by a private party, such as the Restricted Use 3-Day Permit or the 30-Day General Use Permit. A dealer is prohibited from issuing a 3-day permit but may issue a 30-Day General Use Permit in extenuating circumstances. These permits can be obtained through the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) or Authorized Third Party providers.
